Hello and Welcome!

We’re so happy you chose to stay with us here in Burythorpe. We love living here, and hope you enjoy being part of our community during your stay. If you need anything, we’re just a phone call (or message) away.

At the cottage you'll find your essentials.

Towels, lovely bedding and a huge hot water bottle, hairdryer and a fan..

Olive oil from a lovely greek family in Malton, balsamic vinegar, salt & pepper.

Washing up liquid, cloths, dishwasher tabs, Dettol wipes, kitchen roll, bin liners, clingfilm, foil and hand wash.

A woodshed full of logs, a pile of kindling, firelighters and lighters. We'll replenish this every 3/4 days.

Answers to our FAQ's

> The towel rail and underfloor heating are controlled by the thermostat. If you want them on, you'll need to turn up the thermostat - just remember to turn it back down so you don't over heat! > The cleaner is booked to arrive at 10.30am on the day you checkout, if you need extra time please let us know as early as possible - we don't charge extra for late checkout, if we can offer it, we will 🙂 (the official checkout time is 10am). > The outdoor coffee table, BBQ tools (and hopefully you won't need the vacuum cleaner) are all in the bike shed - the padlock code will have been sent to you privately. > The hot tub is filled with fresh water on the morning of your stay, and we use dead sea salt to maintain hygiene. If you’re staying more than 4 nights we’ll come and clean this for you halfway through your stay. We’ll contact you by text to find a time that is convenient for you. If you want the water changing sooner, all you need to do is send us a message and we’ll organise that for you.

Practical tips and things to note

Finding the essentials

The kitchen bin is under the sink and the outdoor bins (including recycling) are located next to the bike shed.

All cooking pans, trays and plates are stored in the dresser. If there is anything you need that is not there, let us know.

The bottom drawer in the dresser holds your firefighters and a lighter. Wood is next to the hot tub. There should be enough wood to last your stay.

Laundry

There are no laundry facilities onsite, but we can offer you a laundry service for a small additional fee. The turnaround time is typically 48 hours – we use a laundrette in Malton. We’ll collect your laundry and drop it off for you.

If you have a tight turnaround, then I’m happy to pop things in my washing machine (not trainers – I’m too afraid!). I’ll wash a 30 degree light and dark wash – but I can’t take responsibility for your clothes if you feel they are returned not as expected. If this is something you need, drop us a message and we’ll get back to you with more details.

Book swap

There are books in the trunk. You’re welcome to swap a book you’ve finished or sit back and flick through the Living North magazines for ideas and inspiration.

First aid kit and fire blanket

There is a first aid kit in the second drawer down in the dresser. The fire blanket is located under the sink.

Fire extinguisher

There is a fire extinguisher outside by the key safe. Only ever tackle fire if it is safe to do so.

Fire safety protocol

Get yourself to safety as soon as possible and then call 999.

You can exit through the downstairs doors and windows. Upstairs, the Velux opens onto the roof or you can exit via the low lying window using bedding and the mattress if needed. Your safest exit strategy will depend on your mobility and the location of the fire.

Recycling and refuse collection

You’ll also find the bins by the bikeshed.

Small black bin: Glass

Small green bin: Plastic & Tins

Big green bin: General waste

Big brown bin: Garden waste. You won’t need to use this bin.

You’ll also find a composting caddy under the sink next to your bin for general compostable waste. If you need to empty your bag, simply pop your compost waste in the small recycling bins and we’ll compost this for you.

Checkout

Please leave the front door key on the inside of the front door, and place the rear door key in the keysafe. Then send us a message (text or Whatsapp) when you’re leaving. Checkout is by 10am to allow for the extended COVID safe cleaning routines.

If there is no one checking in after you, we will gladly extend your checkout at no extra cost but please ask the day before so we can rearrange housekeeping.

Additional linen and pillows

Additional linen and pillows

For stays 7 days or longer, we will change your linens for you.

If your stay is less than 7 days you can request additional linen, if you request a particular item we can do this at no extra charge (eg a replacement fitted sheet) – but a full set of new bedding will incur a small charge to cover the fee of our laundry service.

Useful things to know

The pub across the road

The pub is owned by an Italian family. They home cook all of their meals and if you decide to eat there, prepare for Yorkshire farmer sized portions. They have their own micro-brewery so you’ll also be able to taste your way through their drinks menu.

Local supermarkets (and delivery options)

The closest place to buy food is Lidl. It’s a local favourite as it’s ‘this side’ of the railway, it’s only 5 minutes drive and you skip any traffic heading into Malton (although traffic here means waiting in one queue for maybe 4 minutes).

Drive an extra minute or two across the river and you’ll find a full sized Morrisons and an Asda. The Asda is small but seems to pack a whole lot in. There is also a Sainsburys Local in Malton town centre.

All of the supermarkets deliver here, including Waitrose and Ocado. As do Amazon.

Emergency contacts

Call me (Gemma): 07966 842879 or Andrew: 07976 899504

The nearest hospital is Malton, it’s only 10 minutes drive from the cottage but they don’t always have a doctor in their minor injuries department so call 111 first to get an appointment. They also do not provide an evening service.

For A&E or injuries in the evening you’ll need York Hospital. This is about 40 minutes drive from the cottage, so if it is an emergency you should call 999.

Pet emergencies

The local vet is Mount Veterinary Practice in Malton: https://mountvetmalton.co.uk/

There is a link to connect to an out of hours service on their website if you need it.

Post Office

Post office

You’ll find the post office in Malton market place. It’s next to the bike shop in the square. Go here if you want to go for a lovely coffee in Malton at the same time.

There is another one in Norton, in Costcutter on the Main Street. Go here if all you need is the post office as it’s quicker.

Pharmacy

There’s a Boots on Malton high street and a Lloyds Pharmacy in Malton market place next to the Post Office.

For a 24 hours dispensary you’ll need to check online as these change depending on the day. It is usually in Haxby, which is about 20/25 mins drive.
