Book Club - The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrove

@Kemps Bookstore, Malton Market Place

Tuesday 1st & Thursday 3rd August

1617. The sea around the remote Norwegian island of Vardo is thrown into a vicious storm and the men of the island, out fishing, perish in an instant. Vardo is now a place of women. Eighteen months later, a sinister figure arrives. Absalom Cornet has been summoned to bring the women of the island to heel.

Inspired by real historical events, this is a story about how suspicion can twist its way through a community, and about a love that could prove as dangerous as it is powerful.

Come along to our friendly local Book Group and meet others who share your passion for all things literary. We’re a relaxed lot, so it doesn’t matter whether you devoured the book in one sitting or gave up after two pages

Just come and tell us what you thought, and hear what others made of it too. All opinions welcome – we start with the book, but the discussion can end up anywhere.

Cooking The Books: Appetite- A memoire in recipes of family and food by Ed Balls

@The Cook's Place, Malton (with the lovely folk from Kemps)

Thursday 10th August

Ed Balls: Appetite – A memoir in recipes of family & food Ed Balls was just three weeks old when he tried his first meal in 1967: pureed roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. From that moment on he was hooked on food. Taught to cook by his mother, Ed’s now passing her wisdom on to his own kids as they start to fly the nest. He takes us from his grandma’s shepherd’s pie to his first trip to a restaurant in the 1970s (ordering an orange juice as a starter); from the inner workings of Westminster to the pressures of parenting. This is a collection of the meals he loves most, and the memories they bring back.
Each month Jo Hardy from Kemps selects a book that has a foodie vibe. Jo will discuss the book and open the discussion for review and Gilly Robinson from The Cooks Place will help you to create a dish as mentioned in the text.
Cooking the Books is a great way to bring your love of books and cooking together. A wonderful night out for a group of book lovers or even on your own, to chat, eat, learn new skills, and just a great excuse to read a book.

Romans in Malton

@Malton Roman Fort (organised by Malton Museum)

Tuesday 29th August

Archaeological work on Malton’s Roman Fort, which was as large as any on Hadrian’s Wall, suggests that it was one of very few in the country that was probably operated in varying strength throughout most of the Roman occupation.

Roman soldiers were efficient builders and military forts were regularly altered, abandoned and re-instated as necessity arose. Partly built over later by the Normans and cut through even later by a railway track, what is left of the fort site is an unevenly shaped grass field with banks and ditches, but with many hidden stories to discover. Our tour explains the layout of the fort, and the story of the IX Legion which possibly visited it for a time.
